Salewa Ortles 2 Durastretch Soft Shell Pants
The Salewa Ortles 2 Durastretch Pants are innovative soft-shell alpine trousers that are ideal for glacier mountaineering and ice climbing. Made from Salewa’s Durastretch Bambooskin fabric, they’re highly breathable and fast-drying, but also abrasion and tear-resistant, as well as antibacterial, thanks to the bamboo yarns in the fabric. Durastretch Bambooskin also has four-way stretch and the pants have a gusseted crotch, articulated knees and double stitched stretch seams to provide you with the maximum range of movement for climbing. Elsewhere, internal boot hooks, side zips and large kick patches take care of all your climbing needs.

Durastretch fabric is lightweight, breathable and soft, while at the same time being incredibly durable and abrasion-resistant with the added bonus of four- or two-way stretch. This is mainly thanks to its main component, polyamide, which is well-known for being exceptionally hardwearing and more water-resistant than its close companion, polyester. Durastretch Bambooskin adds bamboo yarn to the mix, which is just as durable but more environmentally friendly to produce. It’s soft and breathable and has lots of antibacterial properties, including a resistance to odours. Durastretch Bambooskin also uses environmentally friendly flurocarbon-free DWR and is Bluesign approved.
The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish has become almost ubiquitous in the outdoor industry, and the satisfying water beading it provides has become the hallmark of a beautiful jacket. It is not strictly waterproof but will provide protection on it’s own against a light shower; however it does wear off so needs to be topped up from time to time. The DWR stops water from soaking into the outer layer of waterproof fabrics like Gore-Tex meaning they remain breathable and light in even in heavy rain.
Bluesign is an international standard for fabric production, which ensures that stringent environmental, safety and efficiency standards are are met by any fabric bearing its logo. Bluesign fabrics use fewer chemicals, less water, safer processes and highly efficient manufacturing techniques to ensure that the creation of your new jacket, rope or backpack doesn’t destroy the world you hope to use it to enjoy.
