The Camp Matik Belay Device is a belay-descender device for use belaying at the crag or on sport climbing routes. The Camp Matik Belay Device is a beginner belayer’s best friend, due to the ‘Anti-Panic system’ which blocks to rope from further falls if there is a problem during a controlled belay. This offers peace of mind to both belayer and climber, as well as the gradual camming action during it’s use that reduces both impact force during a fall and rope wear and tear. A great tool for also helping the belayer become more streamlined in their practice thanks to the double-hinged lever and straight rope path, helping the climber to descend in a comfortable and controlled manner. There is also no worries that the belayer has not closed the device properly, as it cannot be then clipped to a carabiner if this is the case. While this certainly does not mean the belayer can cruise their belaying without due care, it does offer additional support to those less confident in their belay art. A device that is superb for offering assistance with both safety and style.

Paired with Mammut infinity 9.5, Matik performs really well. It’s gradual action shines not only for a fall catch, but also for paying out a slack to the climber. With Grigri it feels on and off in this regard, making it much uncomfortable to give a rope. In contrast, overwriting the cam is not easy with Matik as opposed to Grigri. But I try not to do it as much as possible anyways.
The fail safe joystick is another bonus. It feels much safer if I am belayed by a novice partner with Matik.
Not the best for hangdog. The rope creeps out slowly. For that Grigri or Clickup is better.
Pairing with a fatter rope is not an option.
It’s heavy. I don’t use it for multipitches.
