TNF™ Apex is The North Face’s exclusively developed, signature soft-shell material. It is made from a tightly woven, stretchy synthetic fabric which blocks out wind, is DWR coated to repel light rain and breathable to boot. The inner layer is brushed and soft for extra comfort, culminating in a comfortable, stretchy soft shell which gives great freedom of movement and protection in mild weather. TNF™ Apex Aerobic is lighter, stretchier and more breathable for highly aerobic activities such as running and cycling.
The DWR finish has become almost ubiquitous in the outdoor industry, and the satisfying water beading it provides has become the hallmark of a beautiful jacket. It is not strictly waterproof but will provide protection on it’s own against a light shower; however it does wear off so needs to be topped up from time to time. The DWR stops water from soaking into the outer layer of waterproof fabrics like Gore-Tex meaning they remain breathable and light in even in heavy rain.
