Patagonia Houdini Jacket

Patagonia’s Houdini Jacket is the original lightweight, water-resistant shell; it’s not designed for alpinism like its close relative, the Alpine Houdini Jacket, which makes it about half the weight, at only 102g, and ideal for every activity from trail running, to cycling to hiking. The design is super minimal to keep the weight down, yet it’s still surprisingly feature-heavy; reflective detailing at the back is ideal for runners, while the adjustable hood is simple but doesn’t obstruct your peripheral vision. Half elasticated wristbands and a simple adjustable hem mean you can always keep the weather out, while the zip-up chest pocket, of course, doubles as a stow sack so you can always keep it with you while you’re on the move.

The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish has become almost ubiquitous in the outdoor industry, and the satisfying water beading it provides has become the hallmark of a beautiful jacket. It is not strictly waterproof but will provide protection on it’s own against a light shower; however it does wear off so needs to be topped up from time to time. The DWR stops water from soaking into the outer layer of waterproof fabrics like Gore-Tex meaning they remain breathable and light in even in heavy rain.

Ripstop is a fabric weaving technique often used in the shells and linings of technical clothing. The fabric (most commonly Nylon or polyester) is woven in a crosshatch pattern of stronger fibres at intervals to stop the fabric from tearing, and stop further tearing if it does. Ripstop makes fabric is really strong and was first used to make military equipment such as parachutes, but is now commonly used in lightweight shell jackets and made from finer fibres in order to make garments soft and light while remaining super-tough.

Stow Sack Pockets

This jacket can be packed packed down and stored in one of its pockets, so you can easily store it in your pack or clip it to your rack. This saves loads of space and makes jackets with this feature the ideal just-in-case items for climbing, ski touring and mountaineering.

Patagonia Lifetime Warranty

Patagonia offer an ‘Ironclad Warranty’ which means if you’re dissatisfied with the performance of a product at the time of purchase or afterwards, or if it breaks unexpectedly, they will provide a free exchange, refund or repair. They will also repair damage due to wear and tear for a reasonable price, and have a section on their website that teaches you to repair your own clothing, so there is no need to unnecessarily buy new gear.

Patagonia’s Environmentally Friendly Business Plan

Right from the start, Patagonia has been at the forefront of environmentally friendly production, and are still one of the only companies in the world that offer a completely transparent supply chain to anyone who cares to look. They are constantly experimenting and developing new ways to bring us durable and sustainably produced clothing - recycled polyester, organic cotton, traceable down, responsibly sourced merino and undyed cashmere are all common materials in a Patagonia catalogue. As well as using the best materials and production methods for the planet, Patagonia also make sure every one of their employees is treated fairly, from the shop floor to factories all over the world. And they donate a percentage of their yearly profits to environmental initiatives and community projects across the world.
